Realizations

No more basketball stuff, because basketball is over. Okay, one thing. Williams decided to screw Arizona over and declared for the NBA draft. Bye bye top 5 rank pre-season and automatic championship. He should have stayed another year, he could have worked on his defense more. Whatever though, there’s an amazing class coming in, I guess we’ll just have to show him we can do it without him, and when Arizona does clench that championship next year he’ll be sorry he missed it.

Now to as the title says. This is going to be very short, because I have less than a week of class left for the year and have a shitload of stuff to do.

First, I’d like to say a bit about the finally aired last two episodes of Madoka. It took forever, and honestly the ending was a bit confusing (not so much the ending ending as much as the Madoka stuff), but it received a 10 from me, and has bumped Clannad down to my 3rd favorite anime. Also the HOTD OVA, which I’ve been looking so forward to because there isn’t going to be a second season anytime soon with the mangaka only bringing out a chapter every two months with barely any development in it, didn’t impress. I rated it rather low.

Now onto realizations! (more…)

Yet another one?

Since I’m not sure when the last time I made a non-basketball related post was, I’ll do one now.

School is school, I will say that. I’m killing myself for school, but it’s not giving back. A couple weeks ago I probably put in close to 30 hours of studying within a week of my cell biology test. I was freaking out before I got to it, knowing I was going to fail. I get there, get the test, and I didn’t think it was that bad. I was expecting a C, a D at the worst. Ending up getting a 39. I’ve been busy with other classes, so I haven’t had time to look at the answer key they posted, but I’m kind of hating myself for not writing in pen. Had I written in pen I could have petitioned for a regrade. My reasoning for why I think I had points taken off when I shouldn’t have is because they grades around 150 tests, 6 pages all hand written answers, within 6 hours of the test being taken. I have trouble believing they really took their time to look over them carefully. But I’m stuck with that damn grade for that stupid class.

The virology test I did the worst I was expecting. I was expecting a low B or C. I ended up getting a low C. It’s passing, but not what I wanted. So I’m going to have to figure out how to put more effort into that class.

My first Japanese chapter test I got a high C. I didn’t like it, the past two semesters I never got below a B. I have the 2nd on Monday, then my midterm oral sometime this week and the written midterm the next Monday.

My stupid INDV test…that was a fun day. I get to the bus stop, and something that never happens at that time of day happens- both spots on the bike rack are full. I needed to take my bike that day or I wouldn’t be able to get to classes in time. So I decided to wait for the next bus, since it would get me there about 10 minutes before class started, so I could get to the room about 5 minutes before the exam started. Well, something that has never ever happened in the many months I’ve been taking my bike on the bus- this rack is full as well. So I’m there, a few miles off of campus, with a test that starts in 20 minutes. The next bus comes in a half hour. So what do I do? I get on my bike and I pedal my ass off. I was about to give up about a mile in (I’m not in the best shape, but I’m not in the worst shape either. You try biking 3.5 miles up and down hilly streets), but there was no way I was going to miss the easy A test, so I kept going. With lights and everything I made it a couple minutes late, so I probably biked it in about 15 minutes. I got there and collapsed into my seat. The entire test I was having trouble because my hand was shaking from exhaustion. Wasn’t a fun day. Haven’t gotten the score back yet.

I have tons of exams before spring break, but my next big one is microbial physiology. I can get an A on it. This professor, although a pompous ass, isn’t a complete asshole. There aren’t going to be any curve balls or trick questions. It’s very straightforward, so as long as I know the material front and back that we’ve gone over in class that A is mine.

Time is nonexistent

For me at least, with school. Or rather, time where I can do my own things, such as blogging. But I have about an hour and a half until I have to go back to school, so I’m writing something right now.

School…so much this semester. Microbial physiology is going to kick my ass unless I fight back and kick its ass instead. Cell biology and virology are going to be challenging, but should be doable. The professor wasn’t lying, Japanese does get harder once you hit second year. Yet I’m taking it because I was to learn the language and minor in it. I actually just got back from my INDV section…there’s like 10 people tops in it. And I’m pretty sure almost all of them speak Spanish, along with the TA. It’s not his Spanish speaking section, but still. They must be in it because they actually want to know stuff about Latin America. I just grabbed whatever INDV I could that fit in my schedule so I wouldn’t have to worry about getting almost all my elective done my senior year. Although I can tell you right now (and I’m not glorifying myself here, I’m serious) I am the brainchild of that class. When we were working on a map my TA had to ask out loud if we knew what a peninsula was because so many people had no clue. One of the people I was working with didn’t know where the Sonora Desert is, which is bad considering we live in it.

Last night was all new episodes of stuff, Bones, The Office, 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation finally came back on. Had I watched them, I wouldn’t have been able to watch either Bones or The Office and 30 Rock because stupid American Idol took the 7PM spot last night. However, I watched none of them. Buffy was on for 3 hours last night, and I had to watch that because it’s almost to the end. Tonight should be the series finale, unless Logo decides to be stupid and not air it like they did Monday. I also watched Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica yesterday, and my first thought after it was over: “Shit just got real.” It was unexpected for a mahou shoujo anime, but damn. I must say, I’m surprised that this is turning out to be my favorite of the season, especially since I’ve never found SHAFT shows to be more than a bit of random entertainment.

I leave you now with this awesome ED. Under a cut because of the size.

I cringe at it

I don’t even remember why now, but for some reason I decided to try and find the K-ON! dub online to watch. It was a mistake. In so many ways.

First off, a mistake for it to be dubbed. Like with all cutesy anime, when it’s dubbed it just doesn’t come out right. American VA’s can’t do cutesy. Second it was a mistake for me to look it up.

The voices bug me the most. I try not to be a snob when it comes to that but I can’t help it here. Yui’s voice is horrible, in no way does she seem like the air-head like Aki Toyosaki made her. Ritsu’s voice is WAY too girly. The point of her is that she’s a very tomboyish girl, and she isn’t as tomboyish and rowdy as Satomi Satou made her. Mio’s voice…when I first heard they were going to make a dub I knew I would hate Mio’s voice, no matter the VA. The only true Mio is that voiced by Youko Hikasa, one of the most amazing seiyuu in my opinion. Then there was Mugi…I should have figured that it wouldn’t be good. Minako Kotobuki has a somewhat unique voice that she made to fit Mugi very well, and it’s just not possible to duplicate it, or even come close to it.

There was also a short appearance by Ui, whose voice just wasn’t to my liking. I can’t really explain in words how it wasn’t right, and then Sawako-sensei’s voice…I won’t ever know because I won’t keep watching it, but when it comes to her kickass rock voice it’s not going to be pretty. Nodoka, wasn’t a huge fan of, but probably the best of the dub. I fear for Azusa.

I also hated how they pronounce the names. I know they can’t be exactly like Japanese, but would it hurt to put the emphasis on the correct syllable?

However, what I will give them credit for is leaving some Japanese aspects to it. For example, using family name then given name to introduce themselves, and they also kept a lot of the honorifics in, although it sounds a bit awkward.

Actually, I think once finals are over if they’ve gotten that far and I can find it I’ll go to the episode of where they sing, because since it’s Bandai who licensed it (along with others such as Haruhi), I have a bad feeling they decided to dub the songs (such as in Haruhi), and I know what won’t be pretty.

But yes. Almost the entire time I was cringing.

Just an update I guess

Since I haven’t posted anything in half a month apparently. Damn, the month went by fast. This year is going by fast. That always happens when I have school, which is so weird because high school went by so slow. I’m already halfway done with the semester. Crazy.

So just some random stuffs. First, my kitties arrived. Last Sunday. I was so happy. I guess I’m still pretty happy they’re here, although Izumi is a complete attention whore (I’m slowly getting her out of that, but to the point where she’s still affectionate) and Rosco, who was never one for a lot of attention at home, has become a complete attention whore. They don’t let me sleep in the morning. I somehow always end up being forced awake a half hour before I plan to if not earlier. Initially Izumi wouldn’t leave me alone at night, but now she’s stopped. Rosco has started sleeping on the bed with me for most of the night. I wouldn’t mind if Izumi did, I just can’t be petting her all night. Also there is cat fur all over my furniture now, and one of them, I’m not sure which, started to put a hole in my loveseat which is barely a month and a half old. I made sure to buy then a scratching post, I used my own money to buy one for them, yet they don’t use it much. My guess is that Izumi doesn’t know how, and Rosco has forgotten. When Rosco was a kitten until about three we had a nice cat tree for him, Tuffy and K.C., but then it eventually was torn to shreds and a new one was never gotten. Along with that the house slowly started to fill with more and more cats, and with no scratching post they all started using the walls and furniture, both which look like complete crap. So at the house Izumi has always used the furniture or the wall as a scratching post, and it’s been awhile since Rosco has used one. I keep yelling at them when they try to use the couch, hopefully they’ll get it soon.

Just watched episode 24 of K-ON!!, which is the last episode in accordance with the last chapter of the manga. KyoAni, you did it justice. At a few moments you had me tearing up. I think you did the end of K-ON!! justice more than Bones did FMA: B, and that’s saying something when I compare anything to my all time favorite manga/ anime series. Next week’s episode looks interesting.

That’s all I really have to say. I have a mycology exam I haven’t even started studying for in 13 hours, so I should probably get on that if I want to actually sleep tonight.

K-ON! and Occult

This post will be mostly if not all anime/manga related. I was feeling rather sad today when I read the last chapter of K-ON!, and then thought how it’s turning into another FMA with the manga ending and the anime ending very soon. Then I watched episode 11 of Occult Academy and it made me happier. It won’t be much, but I’m going to put my thoughts behind a cut since I don’t want to spoil any of it for anyone for hasn’t watched/read what I write of.

And it is over…

There are so many icons I could have used, but I decided on this one.

It is over. Four wonderful years of my life, over. Saying only four years makes me feel ashamed to consider myself a fan, from not being one from the very beginning. Yes people, Fullmetal Alchemist is over. The wonderful manga from the brilliant mangaka, it’s all done. Finished. No more will I be able to find a happy place once a month when I really need it with the latest chapter. Soon I won’t even be able to blow steam off with the anime, because that ends this month as well. And after that, Fullmetal Alchemist is done. The fandom which has consumed a large part of my teen years and the first year of my 20′s is done. And I must say, I feel almost as empty as I did when I finished the last Harry Potter book. Although perhaps the reason for that is because I had to wait years between the books, and only a month between chapters. It’s still a painful, empty feeling. I really did tear a bit when I finished it.

I never thought I’d see it

Heroman. Wow. If there were such a thing as American anime, then this would be it. I’m not sure what was being thought when it was created, but it’s oh so obvious that this is a show with “American ideals”. In a way it kind of pisses me off, because the first few minutes they show heavy traffic complete with Hummers (which only douchebags drive IMO), suburbia galore, and tons and tons of American flags. I should have counted how many there were in the first episode alone. And then some of the characters even dress so you know they’re American. Then of course you couldn’t have America (this particular anime based in what is essentially California) without the ever so wide variety of clicks. There’s the main character, a scrawny kid who essentially dresses in a fashion I’d maybe call punk. Then there’s the blond haired blue eyes cheerleader who wears nothing but her cheerleading uniform, and of course her older brother who wears a red, white and blue shirt and is built like a jock, and has a little posse he hangs with, all filled with rich kids. And there’s the skateboarder kid who you’d never expect to be based of an American stereotype because his hair is huge like you often see in anime. And of course, Heroman, the giant robot, is dressed with the patterns of the American flag on him. I haven’t really watched that much mecha (pretty much just Eureka 7 and Code Geass), but this is different. I do believe most mecha involve someone being inside the giant robot, whereas this giant robot turns into a giant robot after being unleashed by the giant cool looking hand thing and is just a giant solid robot with nobody inside him.

I’m assuming the extra exclamation point was intentional

So I finally watched the first episodes subbed on K-ON!!. Only once I actually watched the raw, which was like four hours ago, did I realize that to distinguish it from the first season they added an extra exclamation point. My memory isn’t the best regarding the manga, but I’m pretty sure they skipped some stuff, pretty much the rest of the stuff that happened in their second year and it started off with the girls in their third year (Azusa in second). From the previews it looks like they’re going to find Sawako-sensei’s old guitar and go through that chapter. I don’t remember where that chapter was sequentially, but I do remember reading it.
